Marlborough Running Club's Latest News
If you have any news that you think our members should know about such as social events, club trips or pre-booked Saturday runs, please email webbloke@marlboroughrunningclub.co.uk with the details.
Apologies
Apologies to anyone I should have mentioned in this section but have not. I try to keep an ear to the ground for race results and other newsworthy items but I do miss a fair amount. In the event I miss any club news, individual or team race results, or more importantly any personal performances you feel deserves a mention (and please note that a good personal performance does not have to bear any relation to race position), please do not be shy and send an email to the webbloke@marlboroughrunningclub.co.uk. I'll update this page as soon as I get chance.
Orienteering
There are a couple of local meetings coming up soon for the less experienced orienteer. Like the one in West Woods last year, they will both be mainly one hour
score events (sixty minutes to find as many controls as you can, with the ones further away being worth more than the ones nearby) although there will also be a couple of other courses
you can try which should take less than an hour.
Hopefully there will be someone there to give you advice and a bit of
coaching if you need it. Cost is minimal (probably something like £2-£3
per head at the absolute max). The events are Saturday 16th February in Copse Wood (Bedwyn) and Sunday 2nd March in West Woods. For more details give Nick Jackson a ring. Incidentally, if you ever fancy trying it on a Wednesday, there is
usually an event then too but please note these are 'Big Boys' events.
Non-Stop Ridgeway Attempt - 28 July 2007
Congratulations to Simon Hewitt and Jay Scroggins on completing their non-stop Ridgweay attempt. Simon completed in a new club record of 20 hours and 42 minutes while Jay finished in 22 hours and 20 minutes. Commiserations to Phil Griffiths, who compounded an existing injury while scampering up the hill to the start but still ran 31.8 miles before deciding enough was enough.
On the prediction front, Pete Horsell was closest predicting Jay's time and joint closest predicting Simon's, so Pete wins the bottle of wine.
Heddington Relay - 10 July 2007
Congratulations to Janet Whiting, Rebecca Capener and Alison Meredith for winning the ladies team event.
Kennet Kanter - 1 July 2007
Congratulations to all 8 MRC runners who took part, but especially to Paul Coles, Peter Reid and Pete Horsell who came third in the team event.
Tourn de la Cascade d'Ars
Congratulations to those MRC members who took went to the Pyrenees to take part in the Tourn de la Cascade d'Ars in the small village of Aulus les Bains. A special mention should go to Debbie Simpson and Catherine Murphy for making the podium in their age category and to Ted Townsend who should have been on his age category podium but missed out when he was mistakenly classified as an M40.
Great Bedwyn 10km
Well done to all six MRC runners who took part in the Great Bedwyn 10km, but especially to Henrietta MacKinnon who was third lady (click here to jump to the gallery where you will find the podium photo).
Vives les femmes!
Congratulations to Rebecca and Jo and commiserations to Simon, Ted and Ross who were truly 'roasted' in Paris at the weekend.
With temperatures around 27-28°C, Rebecca knocked an amazing 12 minutes
off her PB, finishing in 3:31 and in the top 200 in the women's race;
and Jo sailed through her first marathon without hitting the wall and
with the classic comment "I don't understand why so many people were
walking when they ONLY had 3 miles to go!" (Maybe something to do with
the previous 23 miles Jo - ask Simon, Ted or Ross!)
The blokes clearly aren't as tough as the girls and couldn't cope with
the conditions. Simon and Ted were 10-15 minutes slower than they
expected and almost dropped out, while Ross was forced to retire at 18
miles for fear he would never run again!
Last word from Ted: "Truly awful - like the infamous roasting Ridgeway
Relay of 4 or 5 years ago, but at least I only had to run 8 miles then".
Marshfield Mudlark
The latest round of the MRC club championship took place on 1 April at the Marshfield Mudlark, a small but well organised cross country 10k. Congratulations go to all who took part but especially to Alison Meredith, who was the third lady home and Pete Horsell and Ted Townsend for finishing first and second in their age category. Despite the category being called Super Veteran (Over 50) both Pete and Ted decided against wearing red pants over the top of running leggings.
Online Shopping
Chris Wardell would like to share his recent shopping experience at Champion Sports & Leisure (see the links page). He phoned through an order for a new pair of running shoes at 4.45pm and they arrived the very next morning. Chris was very impressed with the speed and quality of service
Terminator 2007
This year's race for big girls & boys was probably the biggest mud-fest so far with one reviewer on the Runner's World website suggesting there should be more focus on safety next year (I would suggest staying at home and playing dominoes or perhaps sticking to road races?). Congratulations go to all MRC runners, with everyone finishing in the top 30% of finishers, but especially to Alison Meredith for coming second in her age category.
Grizzly 2007 - POSTPONED
This year's annual pilgrimage to run in the Grizzly at Seaton, planned for March 11th, has been postponed until 9th September due to the possibility of the closure of Branscombe beach. Following the much publicised grounding of the MSC Napoli at the end of January, it is likely that the police will close sections of the coastline. For more information, check the Axe Valley Runners website.
Dursley Dozen
Well done to all who took part in this club championship race, especially to Pete Horsell and Ted Townsend for coming second and third in their age categories.
Highworth Half Marathon
Congratulations to all who took part this year, especially to Pete Horsell and Debbie Simpson for achieving new PBs for the distance.
New Personal Best Page
If you look along the menu above you will see there is now a PBs page on this website. If you would like to add your PBs please send an email to the address at the top of this page.
Rough & Tumble
Congratulations to all who took part. A special mention should go to everyone except, well, me really! Ted for backing up last week's result by winning the M60 by 9 minutes and getting a trophy, to Chris for an excellent 5th place, to Simon for kicking my sorry bottom with such ease and to Debbie for yet another excellent result.
Gloucester 10
Well done to all those who took part, especially Ted for celebrating his recent BIG birthday by winning his first M60 category at the first attempt.
2007 Club Subscriptions - NOW DUE
As at 01/01/2007, Marlborough Running Club annual subscriptions are now due for everyone, EXCEPT those individuals who subscribed to the club for the first time on or after 1 July 2006, as their initial subscription continues until 01/01/2008. May I suggest passing your monies to Ted in coins immediately prior to the Slaughterford 9 so that everyone else has a chance to beat him in the club championship this year !!!
MRC Wins the Great Kennet & Avon Canal Race (26 December 2006)
Well done to all those who managed to wake up early on Boxing Day to enter the Great Kennet & Avon Canal Race, a six leg relay race of 24.2 miles. Our "Onion" team managed to win the event, while our "Sage" team came fourth.
2006 Club Championship Results / 2007 Club Championship Details
Congratulations go to both Peter Reid and Alison Meredith as deserving winners of the 2006 club championship. No resting on laurels though, as 2007's championship promises to be even more open. The 2007 Club Championship details are now available - just click on the Club Championship link on the side of this page for the latest information then simply send Ted an email to enter.
Bromham 10k - 3 December 2006
Well done to Alison Meredith & Debbie Simpson for coming third and fourth in their age category at the Bromham 10k. Congratulations should also go to all those who managed a PB on what I understand was a fairly breezy day.
Chicago Marathon - 22 October 2006
It is time to pay homage to Paul Coles for finishing Chicago in 2:59:28. Perhaps he will even decide to give Dublin a miss next week now that he has broken the three hour barrier? Will you go easy on the rest of us in training now Paul?
Swindon Half Marathon - 15 October 2006
Well done to Hen for winning her age category (and finishing fourth lady) in the Swindon Half Marathon.
Clarendon Half Marathon
Congratulations to Debbie Simpson for her third place in her age category in the Clarendon Half Marathon.
Cricklade Half Marathon & 10k
Congratulations to everyone for their individual performances in the Cricklade Half Marathon & 10k races. Special mention should go to Hen, not only because she beat Pete Horsell in a new PB, but also because she was third female vet in the half marathon. Congratulations also go to Peter Reid who was first in his age category.
King Alfred's Torment
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this challenging but enjoyable cross country race, especially to Alison Meredith, who was the third lady in her age group. If we hadn't all rushed off to the pub for a little refreshment Alison may well have won something.
Pewsey 5
Well done to everyone who gave up yet another Wednesday night training run on 2nd August to take part in this road race, with the highest MRC race turnout since the London Marathon in April 2000.
Congratulations go to Chris Rhodes (4th), Ian Newell (6th) and Peter Reid (7th) who won the male team event, Henrietta Mackinnon (11th lady), Rebecca Capener (13th lady) and Debbie Simpson (14th lady) who came second in the female team event and Neville Almond for achieving a personal best. All club results will appear in this website's results section as soon as they are available from Pewsey RC.
Barbury Castle Track 'n' Trail
Well done to everyone who gave up their Wednesday night training run on 5th July to take part in this event, especially to Chris Rhodes for winning the whole event. Chris, Paul Coles and Graham Townsend also won the men's team competition.
Kennet Kanter - or should that be the Kalahari Kanter ?
Well done to everyone who completed the Kennet Kanter on Sunday 2nd July in dangerously hot weather, especially to Ian Newell for finishing fourth. A little tip for the three fastest (Ian, Pete & Paul) - make sure you all put the same team name down for the next race as you would have come second in the team event!
Gloucester 20 - Congratulations to Alison Meredith
After getting a taste for racing congratulations must go to Alison Meredith, who had a great run at the Gloucester 20 finishing 3rd in her age category.
Terminator 2006 - 1st Mens Team
There is no record of it on the Pewsey Vale Running Club website but the Gazette & Herald records the first men's team as a certain Marlborough Running Club. Presuming a team counts as the first three team members home congratulations go to Peter Reid, Ian Newell and Paul Coles.
MRC Wins the Great Kennet & Avon Canal Race (26 December 2005)
Congratulations to Maria Gravina-Coles , Paul Coles, Ted Townsend, Donald Cross, Ian Newell & Pete Horsell who teamed up on Boxing Day to enter the Great Kennet & Avon Canal Race, a six leg relay race of 24.2 miles. Not only did they burn off the excesses of Christmas Day, they also won the event, beating second placed Marlborough Orienteering Club by 7 minutes.
Congratulations also to Simon Hewitt who ran in another team - or should I say AS another team. He ran the whole race from start to finish himself. Trust me Simon, it's easier in a team.
MRC Wins Wessex Ridgeway Relay 2005 (old news, but news nonetheless!)
Not to be confused with our very own Ridgeway Relay, the Wessex Ridgeway Relay is an event organised by the Gillingham Trotters Running Club along the Wessex Ridgeway.
It consists of 12 legs in total of which each team member must run at least two. A Marlborough Running Club team of Paul Coles, Peter Reid, Richard Sharland and Ian Newell decided to make things a bit tougher by running 3 legs each and still won the event, beating a team of Dorset Doddlers into second. Another MRC team of Ted Townsend, Simon Liebling, Dave Wardell, Pete Horsell, Richard Smith and Graham Townsend finished third.

Richard, Peter, Paul & Ian, looking annoyingly fresh after their victory !
