The Avebury8 Trail Race (sponsored by Run Swindon)
The
Avebury8 is an 8 mile trail race which takes place in the Wiltshire countryside, starting and finishing at Avebury, a World Heritage Site famed for its stone circle. The route follows byways and bridleways and is muddy, rutted and difficult under foot.

2009
The sixth running of the Avebury 8 will take place on Sunday 15 November 2009, with a 10.30 start. Entry forms will be available on this website by the end of July, and you will also be able to enter on-line at Runner's World.
We won't be making any major changes to the race this year - it seems to be in a form that runners enjoy. Do be aware that the fickle British weather has produced a fast dry course, once, but it's more likely to be a quagmire in places. You have been warned!

How to sum up the A8 for this year? “A mud-fest in the sunshine” might do it.
Sunday morning 16 November was kind to us, but the sunny weather didn’t alter the fact that the course was satisfyingly appalling! The efforts of the Marlborough Running Club Rain-Dancing sub-section had ensured that everyone who took part sampled the best of Wiltshire mud at first hand. As one runner put it on the Runner’s World website “…I was taken aback by the viscosity of the Wiltshire mud, which seemed to take an unhealthy and tenacious interest in the soles of my shoes…”
As usual the front runners completed the course in unreasonably quick times. The men’s winner was Mitch Piddock from Bath, in 54:41; first lady was Julie Goulding of Swindon Harriers in 68:49. Congratulations to them, to the runners up, to the age category winners – and to all who took part. Thanks for your good humour, especially the smiles for the camera at the finish.
